A long, reeling right-hand reef at the southwestern edge of Godøya island, peeling over large boulders toward a sandy beach with a lighthouse watching over the lineup. Best in W, NW, or N swell with an E wind keeping faces clean. Works across all tides, though boulders become more exposed at low. The right handles size well, running double overhead on good days, while a faster left off the southern end of the beach fires in smaller surf. Experienced surfers will get the most out of it. The size, power, and boulder-strewn inside demand respect. Bottom: Rocky reef into sand. Season: Year-round, peak September to November. Consistency: Reliable when Atlantic swells roll in. Bring a board with enough volume to generate speed through the longer walls, and know your exit before the sets come.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup is mellow and rarely heavy, rated welcoming on most reports. The forecast services crowd rating sits at 3 out of 5, so it gets company without becoming a scrum. Norwegian surf culture has its own particular pressure dynamics in season, when fashion-driven crowds can appear, but the core crew here tends to be experienced and low-key. Dawn patrol in autumn is your best window for quality and quiet.

Access & Facilities

Parking directly at the beach via the bridge to Godøya island. The drive across to the Alnes peninsula is straightforward. Water is clean. Atlantic temperatures in this latitude run cold year-round, so a quality 5/4 with hood, gloves, and booties is non-negotiable for most of the year. Bring your own water and food, facilities are minimal.

Nearby Alternatives

Giske, on the adjacent island, is the commonly cited alternative when Alnes is too big or the wind is wrong. The broader Ålesund coastline has scattered beach and point options that pick up similar Atlantic swell windows if Sandvika is maxed out.
