Colima's answer to Puerto Escondido delivers the same thumping, thick beachbreak barrels on a black sand beach with a fraction of the crowd pressure. S and SSW swells drag energy from deep water and slam the bank with deceptively powerful A-frames that shift constantly, shutting down paddle channels without warning. N and NE winds keep it clean through the morning, but expect onshore slop by 11am almost every day. Works at all tides, best from chest-high to well overhead, and the nearby rivermouth replenishes sandbars consistently from April through September. Bring a spare board because snapped equipment is standard procedure, not bad luck, when the sets arrive overhead. Expert surfers who show up with humility will find one of Mexico's most consistently powerful barrels, everyone else should audit their rescue swimming before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is heavy when small and nearly empty when it gets truly serious. Resident chargers and camping regulars know every bar and set pattern, newcomers should paddle wide, wait their turn, and offer genuine respect. Localism is manageable if you arrive with the right attitude, but humour is scarce in the morning session when everyone is competing for the same waves.

Access & Facilities

Parking is directly on the beach. Basic camping is available, making multi-day stays the standard approach for surfers who want to score the peak conditions. No major facilities beyond camp setup, so stock food and water before arriving. Current can run hard during big swells, so identify the channel before paddling out and have a clear exit plan.

Nearby Alternatives

El Paraiso, a short distance along the same coastline, offers triangular bars and faster hollow peaks that are more forgiving when Pascuales is maxing out. Cuyutlan works on smaller S to SW swells when the beach geometry lines up peaky rather than closing out. Over the state border into Michoacan, Punta la Playa at San Juan de Alima provides a change of scenery with established surf lodging options.
