La Ticla's rivermouth left is the main draw on this stretch of Colima coast, wrapping off the sandbar where the river meets the Pacific with walls that can run 150-300m on a solid S-SW swell. NW swell flips the peak and produces comparable rights, giving the break a wide swell window from S through NW. Offshore NE winds clean it up, and the wave runs well at all tides, starting to show at 3-5ft and holding together up to 12ft before the power gets serious. Intermediate to advanced surfers will find this a high-consistency playground, but expect company: weekends draw ultra-competitive lineups and on a good swell the crowd can be relentless. Bottom: sand rivermouth. Season: year-round, best summer storm swells. Consistency: high. Pack light on valuables at camp and stay alert to your surroundings, as petty theft and occasional extortion have been reported at the camping area over the years.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

La Ticla pulls surfers from all over the world year-round. On any good swell the main peak is heavily contested. Walk north or south of the peak to find smaller crowds and workable secondary banks. Weekend pressure is intense. Dawn sessions and mid-week windows are the practical solution.

Access & Facilities

Take the dirt road off Highway 200 signed for La Ticla, between San Juan de Lima and El Farro. Basic camping on the beach is the primary accommodation. There are no formal parking facilities. River and estuary run-off affects water quality after heavy rain. Shark risk is elevated near the rivermouth. Petty theft at camp is a real concern: keep valuables secured.

Nearby Alternatives

Beginners should head south to Ixtapilla for more forgiving, easier walls. Over the state line into Michoacan, Barra de Nexpa offers long, tubing rivermouth lefts of similar character when La Ticla is too crowded or maxed out. Boca de Apisa provides a thick, fast beachbreak option if you need something different.
