Heavy black-sand shore break on Colima's Pacific coast, about 30 minutes south of Manzanillo, Cuyutlan delivers punishing beach break barrels when the SW swell and sandbars align. Offshore NNE winds clean up the face and occasional rides stretch to 100m over sand, but the majority of waves close out fast and hard. This is advanced territory: strong rip currents have caused drownings here, and big SW pulses amplify every hazard. Crowds are minimal compared to nearby Pascuales, which tells you something about the commitment required. Bottom: sand. Season: consistent year-round on SW swells. Consistency: moderate on quality barrels, high on close-outs. Bring a step-up if swell is overhead and treat the rips with serious respect before paddling out. The beach is also known locally as the site of the 'Ola Verde,' a historical standing wave phenomenon, though the modern surf is raw shore break rather than a peeling point.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineup pressure is light relative to Pascuales down the coast. Fewer surfers means more room to pick and choose peaks, but do not misread emptiness as safety. The dangerous conditions keep casual surfers away. If you are not comfortable reading rips and making quick exit decisions, the low crowd count will not save you.

Access & Facilities

Cuyutlan town sits roughly 30 minutes south of Manzanillo by road. The beach is accessible from the town waterfront. Food and basic supplies are available in town. No formal surf infrastructure on the beach. Watch the water from shore for several minutes before paddling out and identify your rip escape route first.

Nearby Alternatives

Pascuales, a short drive up the coast, is the region's benchmark heavy beach break and worth the trip when Cuyutlan's banks are unfavorable. Manzanillo Bay offers mellower options for lower-commitment sessions when SW swell is running too big for shore break.
