The mouth of the Ostula River delivers one of the more consistent A-frames on Mexico's Pacific coast, breaking over a mix of sand, cobbles, and reef north of Manzanillo along Mex 200. S to SW swells from waist-high to double overhead are the sweet spot, with W swell also producing results. NE offshores groom the walls from spring through fall, when proper Southern Hemisphere pulses fill in reliably. Both lefts and rights peel off the peak with long walls and occasional feathering barrels, suiting everyone from longboarders cruising the shoulders to shortboarders hunting the punchier sections. Bottom: sand, rock, reef. Season: March to November. Consistency: reliable when S swell is running. After heavy rains, water quality drops noticeably near the river mouth, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

La Ticla draws a mixed crew of traveling surfers and locals, and the lineup gets noticeably crowded when a real swell arrives. Localism is generally mellow but can surface when the peak is firing and the lineup is packed. Respect the locals, don't snake sets, and the vibe stays manageable. Dawn patrol during peak season is the clearest path to uncrowded waves.

Access & Facilities

Signed off Mex 200, access is straightforward. Small beachside facilities cater to surfers. Watch for exposed rocks on the inside and urchins near the reef sections, particularly at lower tides. River mouth water quality is fair under normal conditions but deteriorates after significant rainfall.

Nearby Alternatives

When La Ticla is too crowded or the swell is uncooperative, the Colima and Jalisco coastlines along Mex 200 hold a handful of lesser-known beach and point setups that can pick up the same S and SW energy with fewer bodies in the water.
