An ultra-hollow left barrel sitting deep inside a bay on Nias, The Machine is one of those waves that exists more in theory than in practice post-2005. The 2005 earthquake uplifted the reef significantly, meaning it now needs massive spring high tides combined with a macking S to SW swell just to become marginally rideable. Offshore winds are NE. A mid-wave kink introduced by the seismic shift makes threading through to the channel almost impossible, and even on a good day the wave barely classifies as surfable by most standards. Expert surfers only, and even then expect to watch more than surf. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: SW swell months, low consistency. Consistency: low. Bring a step-up or gun and serious patience, and accept that most sessions end with zero waves ridden. Pollution from a nearby estuary is worth noting if you paddle out after heavy rain.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Rarely crowded, simply because it rarely works and the approach is not straightforward. On the exceptional days it does fire, expect any surfer staying in the Lagundri Bay area to make the trip. No particular localism pressure noted, but respect the lineup when it does switch on.

Access & Facilities

No parking and no facilities at this spot. Access is on foot from the bay area. Estuary and river runoff affect water quality, especially after rain. The reef is the primary hazard: submerged and unforgiving at lower tides.

Nearby Alternatives

When The Machine isn't working, which is most of the time, the main draw in the area is The Point at Lagundri Bay, a right that suits a far wider range of conditions and skill levels. Sobatu, a short walk west, is another left option but also needs big swell to show any form.
