Indonesia's most storied right-hander has earned its reputation on pure mechanics alone. Tucked into the northwest corner of Lagundri Bay at the southern tip of Nias Island, the wave needs a solid S to SW swell, typically 6ft and above, to wrap around the bay's headland and load onto the tabletop reef. When it fires, a jacking takeoff feeds directly into a freight-train barrel that peels with surgical precision for up to 10 seconds. The 2005 earthquake uplifted the reef, making it hollow and wide from chest high to triple overhead, though dead low tide is strictly for experienced tube hunters. Mid to high tide is the sweet spot for most surfers. NW winds keep it glassy, and the deep channel makes paddle-out a dry-hair affair. Bottom: shallow reef, rocks, sea urchins. Season: May to October peak, with year-round potential. Consistency: high when swell arrives. Water quality is poor as effluent from Sorake Beach losmen runs directly into the bay.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are a constant at any rideable swell. Locals and seasoned tube hunters dominate the best pits. Snaking will not be tolerated and patience is genuinely rewarded here. Swell size does not thin the pack, it just shifts the skill floor. Go at dawn, or mid-week if you can. The vibe is generally functional rather than hostile, but respect the rotation.

Access & Facilities

Getting here requires multiple flights to Gunung Sitoli, then an overland run south to Sorake Beach. Losmen and small hotels line the beach with surf shops and food nearby. The paddle-out through the keyhole channel is straightforward. Walking back across the reef via the tiled stepping stones on the inside is the standard exit. Bring malaria prophylaxis, reef booties, and zinc for extended sessions.

Nearby Alternatives

When The Point is too crowded or too big, Hiliduha (Dipi) offers a sheltered reef peak with committed tubes on the right swell. For left-handers, The Machine in the bay goes ultra-hollow on big spring high tides, and Asu Island's long sweeping left is worth the boat ride north when Nias conditions deteriorate.
