Long, sweeping left-hand lines refract around the northern tip of Asu island, stacking up through three distinct sections that throw out throaty barrels with serious consequence at size. SSW swell is the key, with offshore southerlies grooming the face, the wave handles size with ease up to 18ft and stays consistent enough to draw dedicated land-camp crews and occasional charter boats. Speed is non-negotiable through the pinching tube sections, but walls and workable lips give advanced surfers room to manoeuvre between the barrels. Experienced intermediates will find friendly days at 5-8ft, while larger SSW pulses test professionals. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: April through October. Consistency: high. Getting in and out over the needle-sharp, earthquake-uplifted reef is a sole-destroying exercise, so bring booties or flip-flops, and consider paying local boat crews to ferry you around rather than tackling the overgrown concrete path.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are manageable outside peak season, building mid-year when charters drop in on top of land-camp crews. The lineup can get competitive fast when boats arrive. Dawn sessions during shoulder months give the cleanest look at the wave with the fewest bodies.

Access & Facilities

Asu is a small island, remote by design. There is no parking and no facilities. The concrete access path was built in the wrong place and is now overgrown. Entry and exit over razor-sharp uplifted reef demands booties at a minimum. Local boat ferries from the village are worth every rupiah. Come self-sufficient: water, wax, leash spares, and reef first-aid essentials.

Nearby Alternatives

If NW winds swing onshore at Asu, the default move is south toward other Nias reefs with better wind protection. Further north, Afulu offers left lines when it cooperates, though the reef has its own quirks post-uplift.
