A remote left reef at the northern end of Nias, Afulu delivers fast, walling lefts with a punishing inside bowl over exposed coral. S to SW swells in the 4-12ft range are the target, easterly winds keep it clean and the wave works across all tides. The 2005 earthquake lifted the reef roughly a metre, reshaping what was once a cleaner line into a two-part ride: an easier outside roll-in transitions to a workable wall before launching into a shallow inside bowl that demands respect. Accomplished intermediates can handle the outside section but should read the bowl carefully before committing. The lineup rarely sees more than a handful of surfers at once, and the sessions here tend to be easygoing when numbers stay low. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: May through October. Consistency: medium. Bring booties. The coral is sharp and shallow on the inside, and getting caught inside during a set is a real risk.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Afulu sees very few surfers by Nias standards. A small land camp accommodates a handful of guests, and boat charters occasionally call in, but it's rarely more than ten people in the water. The vibe in the lineup has historically been relaxed and cooperative. That said, limited access means the dynamic can shift quickly if multiple boats arrive at once.

Access & Facilities

Boat access is the standard approach, roughly a four-hour ride from some departure points, there is also a land camp reachable by road from Lagundri, though the overland drive is long. The camp is basic with no shops nearby. Pack everything including food, water, and first aid. There are no facilities beyond what the camp provides.

Nearby Alternatives

If Afulu is maxing out or the inside bowl is too sketchy, the Hinako Islands to the south offer several options including Asu, a long sweeping left that works well on S to SW swell. Lagundri Bay and its surrounding reefs are roughly an hour south by boat and provide more infrastructure and multiple wave options when northern Nias conditions aren't cooperating.
