A reef break on the Côte Bleue west of Marseille, Tamaris punches above its usual short-ride reputation when the Mediterranean delivers a solid NW or SW groundswell. On smaller days expect quick, punchy walls under 50m, push it to head-high-plus and the reef lines up into genuine barrels with rides stretching past 100m. It works across a wide size window from under 1ft up to 8ft-plus, though the sweet spot is 3-6ft with light offshore winds from the SE or E. Intermediate surfers can read reef on smaller swells, but size and crowds both demand respect. Bottom: reef. Season: autumn and winter swells. Consistency: moderate. Check the forecast carefully before the drive out from Marseille, as the Med can go flat without warning.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays stay relatively quiet, but weekends draw crowds from Marseille and the surrounding area. Expect a packed lineup on any decent Saturday swell. Dawn patrol on weekends is the practical answer. Respect the reef, respect the rotation, and keep it civil.

Access & Facilities

Take the A55 from Marseille toward Martigues, exit Carry Côte Bleue, then exit La Couronne and follow signs for Tamaris. Facilities are minimal at the break itself, stock up on water and food before leaving town. The rocky entry requires reef-safe footwear and attention at all tide stages.

Nearby Alternatives

The Côte Bleue coastline has additional reef setups that pick up similar NW and SW swells when Tamaris is blown out or too crowded. L'Estaque and the Marseille city breaks can offer shelter from cross-shore winds on days when the swell wraps into the bay.
