Carnon's beachbreak is shaped by the port jetty on the west side, which organises what would otherwise be a formless stretch of Mediterranean sand into rideable peaks. Optimal swell arrives from the SE to SW, typically running 1-4ft, with a NW offshore wind keeping faces clean. The jetty at Les Roquilles funnels swell into a defined takeoff zone, producing short lefts and rights in the 0-50m range. Intermediates will find the most enjoyment here, but expect competition: this is one of the busiest lineups in the Montpellier coastal zone, and locals guard it closely given how inconsistently the Med cooperates. Bottom: beach. Season: autumn and winter swells are most reliable. Consistency: medium. Arrive early on any forecast swell or the lineup fills fast with locals who know the spot better than you do.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Carnon draws a regular local crew from Montpellier and surrounding towns. The inconsistency of Mediterranean surf breeds possessive lineups: when it's on, people show up fast. Expect a busy peak and territorial energy. Respect priority, don't snake, and keep a low profile if you're visiting. Dawn patrol on autumn swells is your best window for elbow room.

Access & Facilities

A carpark makes access straightforward. Camping is available nearby, useful for multi-day swell chases. The harbour area at Les Roquilles is the focal point. No significant hazards or pollution concerns flagged, but watch the jetty itself on bigger days.

Nearby Alternatives

If Carnon is blown out or flat, Grande Motte's harbour jetty a few kilometres east can offer a shifting peak with occasionally high-quality shape on the same swell. Further afield, La Mairie produces consistent rights worth checking if the beachbreak scene is too crowded.
