A cold-water reef and rocky beach setup on Vancouver Island's remote southwest coast, Sombrio fires best on solid NW or W swells in the 5-8ft range with offshore SE winds. Four distinct breaks share a compact horseshoe bay: Firsts is a reef peak with a workable left and a right that fades into the rivermouth. Seconds runs longer to the left off a reef section. Chickens is a rocky beachbreak in the middle for those not ready to commit to the reefs, and the expert-only left at Waterfalls breaks close to a cliff face with small cascades above the lineup. All tides work to varying degrees, though the reef setups reward patience for the right swell window. This is experienced-surfer territory: the reef entries, cold Pacific water, and exposed location demand solid ocean awareness. Bottom: reef and rock. Season: fall through spring. Consistency: requires committed swell, NW to W window, and a solid forecast check before the drive.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends bring serious numbers for a remote break. The Canadian lineup here has a reputation for being welcoming, but the horseshoe bay concentrates surfers into defined peaks, so it fills fast when the swell is running. Arrive early on good swells. Weekday sessions are significantly quieter and worth planning around.

Access & Facilities

Past Sooke on the Sooke Highway toward Port Renfrew, roughly 45 minutes. A dirt road leads to parking, and a short trail walk gets you to the bay. No commercial facilities on site, so pack food, water, and warm layers. The Pacific here runs cold year-round.

Nearby Alternatives

Port Renfrew has additional exposed breaks along the same swell corridor when Sombrio is maxed out or too crowded. Jordan River, closer to Sooke, offers a more accessible reef option and is worth checking on the same run if conditions or crowds don't work at Sombrio.
