Port Renfrew
A fickle rivermouth break on the north end of the bay at Port Renfrew, on Vancouver Island's rugged west coast, that rarely earns its keep but can surprise on a big south swell. It needs significant swell energy to fire, and even then the setup is unpredictable: the river current pushes a rip across the break that makes positioning tricky and forces you to paddle back to the beach and start again each ride. On the occasional large S swell it can peel as a short right-hander with some shape, but driftwood in the shorebreak and heavy water movement make it a hazardous session. Bottom: sand and rivermouth. Season: autumn and winter swells. Consistency: low. Bring a longer board to help with the paddle and be ready to work hard for short rides. ## Wave & Conditions Needs a solid S to SW swell to show any real shape, and even then rides top out around 50-150m on a good day. The rivermouth rip is the defining feature: use it to get out, but it will drag you through the break zone fast. Driftwood and shore pound are genuine hazards at size. Cold Pacific water year-round demands a full suit. ## Crowd & Localism Almost always empty on weekdays with just a handful of surfers on weekends. No significant localism pressure, but the wave's inconsistency means the lineup is self-selecting for experienced surfers who understand moving water and cold-water hazards. ## Access & Facilities Head to the very north end of the bay in Port Renfrew where the river meets the ocean. No formal facilities at the break itself. Port Renfrew has basic services. Pack your own water and food. ## Nearby Alternatives When Port Renfrew is not working, the outer coast beaches along the Juan de Fuca Trail pick up swell more reliably. Sombrio Point, a short drive east, is the area's go-to wave and worth checking first.
