Cox Bay delivers Tofino's most consistent beachbreak across a wide crescent that catches SW and W swell from multiple angles, sitting on Vancouver Island's exposed Pacific coast. Optimal conditions call for SW to W swell in the 3-6ft range with a NE or E offshore wind, and the beach works across all tides, though incoming medium-to-high tide tends to produce the cleanest walls. The ends of the bay offer shelter from N and S winds respectively, while the middle wedges both swell directions into punchy A-frame peaks. Beginners and intermediates will find plenty of forgiving walls, but the beach handles overhead-plus surf and draws a competitive crowd on summer weekends. Bottom: sand. Season: September through February. Consistency: high. Pack a 4/3 wetsuit minimum, the North Pacific water runs cold year-round and swell arrives with force through the fall and winter window.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is welcoming and locals are stoked to see visitors who show respect. Summer weekends and any quality swell bring moderate crowds, but the beach is wide enough to spread out. Weekday sessions in fall or winter offer far more room. The vibe here is one of the mellower ones on the island, no heavy localism to navigate.

Access & Facilities

Park in the designated gravel lot at Pacific Rim Beach Resort. Parking outside the lot risks a tow. Camping is available nearby and the Tofino township has food, rentals, and board repair within a short drive. Water quality is clean with no reported pollution concerns.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cox closes out in bigger swell, North Chesterman Beach handles size better and offers a slightly more sheltered paddle-out. Incinerator Rock, a short drive south, gets hollow and fast when the beachbreaks are maxed out and is worth checking if you have the experience for a punchier reef setup.
