A fast, long-walled right-hand point break on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, Jordan River delivers rides stretching 150-300m on a good swell, pushing past 300m when conditions align. SW to NW swells in the 3-8ft range are the sweet spot, with offshore winds coming from the east. Mid to high tide keeps the wave from getting too shallow over the rocky bottom, though it works across all tides. This is an intermediate-to-advanced wave with a notoriously protective local crew, especially on weekends when the lineup fills quickly. Bottom: point, rock. Season: Oct-Mar. Consistency: reliable in winter. Bring a 4/3 or 5/4 wetsuit plus boots and gloves because the water runs cold year-round, and expect to earn your waves in the lineup before the crowd extends any welcome.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism here is real and well-documented. The local crew is protective of the break, particularly on weekends and during good swells. Dropping in is common and deliberate toward visitors. Come mid-week, paddle wide, wait your turn, and keep a low profile. Aggressive behavior in the lineup is a feature, not an anomaly, so factor that into your decision to paddle out.

Access & Facilities

Head west past Sooke on Highway 14 to reach Jordan River. Basic facilities only. Cold water is non-negotiable year-round, so a full 4/3 minimum is standard, with a 5/4, boots, and gloves recommended in winter months. Rocky bottom means reef booties add a layer of practical protection on the paddle-out.

Nearby Alternatives

Sooke and the broader stretch of the West Coast Trail area offer alternative beach and reef setups when Jordan River is either maxed out or the crowd situation is unworkable. China Beach nearby provides a more sheltered option in bigger swells.
