North Chesterman is the punchiest of Tofino's beachbreaks, sitting on the outer coast of Vancouver Island where autumn SW and WSW swells generate wedging, steep-faced peaks at a sand-bottom beach break. Offshore reefs and islets break up incoming lines, which means the spot needs solid size to come alive but rewards patience with walled, punchy sections both left and right. E and SE winds hold it clean, westerly onshore winds kill it fast. South Chesterman runs gentler and suits learners, while the north end delivers steeper, more powerful peaks for intermediate to advanced surfers when the swell fills in. Bottom: Sand, no rocks. Season: October to April. Consistency: medium, fickle in summer as bars rebuild. Rips run strong on bigger swells, so beginners should stay south and read the beach before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends draw beginner surfers, softboard rentals, and traveling surfers, especially when limited swell-and-wind combos funnel everyone here. The local vibe stays welcoming and easygoing, though standout days get competitive in the water. Weekday dawn patrol thins the crowd considerably during the peak autumn season.

Access & Facilities

Turn left on Lynn Road heading toward Tofino. Multiple parking lots line the right side of the road with marked beach access trails. A surf school operates on the beach. Watch the trails for dog waste. Strong rips on bigger days are the primary hazard, no rock hazards at the main beach.

Nearby Alternatives

Cox Bay, a short drive north, offers longer tapering walls and handles similar swell with a slightly different angle. When Chesterman is blown out or too small, Long Beach to the north provides over 10km of beachbreak with more exposed, consistent options across all skill levels.
