Long Beach delivers a sprawling Pacific beach break inside Pacific Rim National Park, anchored around Lovekin Rock on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The zone between Lovekin Rock and Incinerator Rocks is the surf heart of the beach, where S, SW, WSW, and W swells wrap into consistent a-frame peaks. The Lovekin zone curves outward and faces more west, pulling in noticeably more swell than the rest of the 14km stretch. NE, N, and NW winds clean it up. Best size is waist-high to overhead, working from around 3ft and holding into serious swell. Mid to high tide favors the north side, low to mid suits the south. The crowd is moderate in summer, and genuinely thin in winter, though the peaks near the rock attract a more competent crew. Bottom: sand, no rocks. Season: year-round, with autumn through spring delivering the most consistent surf. Pack a 5/4 with booties, this is cold Pacific water.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Summer brings beachgoers and learners of every level, making it genuinely moderate to busy. Winter sees the crowd thin dramatically, sometimes to a near-empty lineup if you are willing to make the drive. The peaks adjacent to Lovekin Rock draw better surfers, newer surfers should set up further down the beach and leave that zone alone. Localism is mild but respect the competence hierarchy near the rock.

Access & Facilities

Multiple large parking lots sit right off Highway 4, accessible via the Pacific Rim National Park entrance. Day-use and seasonal park passes are required and available at highway kiosks. The drive from Port Alberni is long and scenic, fill your tank before leaving Port Alberni as options disappear. Surf schools and shops operate in Tofino, about 10 minutes north, with Storm Surf Shop a reliable stop for local conditions intel.

Nearby Alternatives

For more advanced or varied surf, bays to the east of Tofino offer reef and point options worth exploring when Long Beach is too crowded or the banks are poor. Wickaninnish Beach, at the south end of the wider stretch, can produce different shape depending on swell angle and is worth a look on smaller swells.
