A historically significant Brazilian beach break, Saquarema sits roughly 100km east of Rio de Janeiro and delivers some of the country's most consistent and powerful surf across two distinct corners. S to SE swells light up the east corner (Praia da Itauna's Point) with long hollow lefts, while S to SW swells fire up the west corner (Barrinha) for rights. NW to NE winds are ideal offshore. The wave works from chest-high through double-overhead and can hold triple-overhead-plus on clean SE or SW pulses at the respective corners. Fall and winter are the peak months, though it breaks year-round. Bottom is sand with a rock shelf at the east end that locks in quality banks. Beginners should size it carefully as the paddle is relentless and getting caught inside on a big SSW-SSE set is genuinely punishing. Weekdays are manageable, weekends draw competitive regional crowds.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is real here. Weekdays are mellow and the lineup is approachable, but weekends bring packed crowds and a competitive edge. Respect the pecking order, don't snake, and basic Portuguese goes a long way. Dawn patrol on weekdays is your best window for quality waves with breathing room.

Access & Facilities

Easy to reach from Rio via the RJ-106. Signs point you in. Parking is available near the beach. Food, water, and board rentals are accessible in town. Water is generally clean but can turn cold quickly after strong E winds or currents pushing in from offshore, so bring a spring suit as backup even in summer.

Nearby Alternatives

When Saquarema is maxed out or blown out, the Marica coastline to the west has beach breaks that pick up similar swell with less crowd pressure. Further afield, the Região dos Lagos offers several beach peaks that rotate into form depending on swell angle.
