A fast, hollow rivermouth left that occasionally ranks among Rio's finest waves, Barra de Guaratiba fires when SE to S swells stack against a triangulated sandbar at the edge of a military-controlled coastline. Optimal conditions require SE to S swell in the 3-10ft range, NE offshore wind, and a low-to-mid tide to push the cylindrical walls into long, barreling sections running 150-300m. When it clicks, the wave draws expert crowds fast: the lineup fills quickly on any decent swell, localism is real, and pollution from the nearby rivermouth is an ongoing concern. Bottom: rivermouth sand. Season: SE swell season, autumn through winter. Consistency: medium. Bring a board you can drive hard in hollow, fast conditions and paddle out early because the peak gets territorial by mid-morning. Sharks are regularly spotted near the rivermouth, so the hazard list is longer than it first appears.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The lineup is always busy on swell, and localism is a genuine factor. This is not a spot to drop in on the wrong person. Dawn patrol on a weekday is the most viable window for visitors to find space and avoid peak pressure. Respect the hierarchy, take your turn, and read the room before asserting yourself.

Access & Facilities

Parking is available at the beach. There are no facilities on site. The 40km of beach to the west is military land: do not attempt to walk it as soldiers actively patrol and will arrest trespassers. Paddling or SUP along the coast is reportedly tolerated. Water quality is commercially polluted near the rivermouth. Factor that in, especially after rain.

Nearby Alternatives

If Guaratiba is blown out or the bar is dead, Grumari to the northeast is more consistent and handles a wider range of conditions and abilities. Prainha is the next step up the coast and is considered the benchmark: if nothing is working there, the region is likely flat.
