Camboinhas is a sandbar beach break sitting between Piratininga and Itacoatiara on the Niterói coast, southeast of Rio de Janeiro, with a reputation for dramatic swings in wave size. It needs a meaningful swell pulse to produce rideable peaks, but when the sandbar aligns and a solid S to SE groundswell fills in, it can hold waves well overhead. Offshore winds from the N to NW clean up the face and allow the peaks to wall up properly. The beach handles a wide size range on paper, but the real quality window sits in the 3 to 8ft range where the sandbars can produce defined, punchy peaks. On small days the place is flat or close-out prone, and reports suggest flat spells are common. This is genuinely a spot for experienced surfers who can read shifting beach-break peaks and handle fast, powerful sections. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn and winter swells, roughly March through August. Consistency: low to moderate, heavily swell-dependent. Pack a step-up if you plan to be there during peak swell season, and check the sandbar position on arrival before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Camboinhas is lightly attended even by Rio-area standards. Weekday sessions are described as empty, and weekend crowds rarely exceed a handful of surfers. The relative obscurity comes partly from inconsistency: if you show up on the wrong day there is simply no wave. When it is on, expect a relaxed atmosphere, but treat the water accordingly.

Access & Facilities

The beach sits near the Itaipu Multicenter shopping mall on the road toward Itacoatiara. Basic facilities are limited compared to the more developed Niterói beach strips. Bring your own water and supplies. The surrounding area offers good onward options if the swell is not cooperating.

Nearby Alternatives

Itacoatiara, a short drive away, is a heavier reef-influenced beachbreak that handles the same S to SE swells and is significantly more consistent. Piratininga is another sandbar option in the same swell shadow and is worth checking on the same run.
