Powerful, hollow beachbreak peaks about 100km west of Rio de Janeiro make Saquarema the contest capital of Brazilian surfing, and Itauna is the reason why. E-SE swells push long tubular lefts that can stack to 10-12ft on good days, while S-SW swell flips the bank to grind out punchy rights. NW offshore winds clean it up, and it runs on all tides, though size and direction dictate which peak deserves your attention. This is a wave for surfers who can handle fast, hollow conditions with a competitive, dialled-in local crew who own every section. Bottom: beach. Season: year-round. Consistency: high. Bring a quiver ranging from a 5'8 to 7'4 and be ready to step up when solid swell arrives, because the outside sets are not forgiving to undergunned visitors.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Itauna hosts top-level national and international contests for a reason: the locals are exceptional and they know every shift on every sandbar. Crowds are consistent, and peak-hour sessions are competitive. Visiting surfers who show respect and patience tend to get waves. Dawn patrol is the practical move. Do not snake, do not drop in, and read the pecking order before paddling for sets.

Access & Facilities

A car park sits directly at the break, making access straightforward. Camping facilities are available nearby. The Nazaré Church, built in 1630 at the mouth of the lagoon, is a visible landmark but also a source of water pollution, so check conditions before paddling out. The water can run cooler here than at Rio city beaches.

Nearby Alternatives

Praia da Vila sits roughly 3km from Itauna and offers a second beachbreak option in the same swell window. When Saquarema goes flat, Jaconé to the west can pick up SW swell and spin off some cylindrical sections worth checking.
