Lopes Mendes delivers hollow, powerful beach-break peaks on a remote island that requires real commitment to reach. Sitting on Ilha Grande off Angra dos Reis, it picks up S and SE swells from 3ft and handles solid surf up to 8ft-plus before closing out. Offshore NW winds groom the faces cleanly. Best suited to experienced surfers who can read a punchy, fast beach break, crowds are thin on weekdays, light on weekends given the access logistics. Bottom: sand. Season: March through September when South Atlantic swells are most consistent. Consistency: moderate, swell-dependent. No cars exist on the island, so commit to the journey or stay home: ferry from Mangaratiba or Angra dos Reis to Abraão, then a 30-minute boat ride and 15-minute walk, or a 2-hour trek through Atlantic Forest.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Localism is real here. The effort of getting to the island does filter crowds, keeping weekday lineups quiet, but the locals who make this their home break are protective of it. Paddle out with patience, wait your turn, show genuine respect, and don't paddle around people. Don't be the group that arrives by boat and immediately drops in.

Access & Facilities

Drive BR-101 to Mangaratiba or Angra dos Reis, then take the ferry to Abraão on Ilha Grande. No cars on the island. From Abraão, catch a short boat to the adjacent beach, then walk 15 minutes to Lopes Mendes, or hike 2 hours through Atlantic Forest. Bring water, food, and sunscreen. Facilities at the beach are minimal. The island has accommodation in Abraão.

Nearby Alternatives

Ilha Grande has other beaches accessible by boat from Abraão when Lopes Mendes isn't firing or the lineup is crowded. Saco do Céu and Angra's mainland breaks offer options if the swell misses the island entirely.
