A slab of exposed reef tucked in the far right corner of the bay, Backdoor is one of the more consequential waves in this stretch of Rio de Janeiro's southern coast. It needs NE to S swell at 5ft or above to wake up, and a higher tide to keep it from going completely dry beneath you. Offshore winds from the NW groom the face, but the window is narrow and the wave is frequently blown out or flat. Only riders comfortable with sucky, ledgey drops onto shallow reef should be in the water here. Bottom: submerged reef. Season: medium consistency, swell-dependent year-round. Consistency: medium. Arrive early on any working day since crowds build fast despite the difficulty, and the wave's unforgiving nature doesn't stop the lineup from packing out on weekends. Bring a board you're willing to ding on a shallow exit, and scope the tide before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The spot draws a dedicated crew despite the expert-only conditions. Weekends push the lineup from rarely crowded to packed. The technicality acts as a natural filter, but don't mistake that for a relaxed atmosphere. Respect priority, don't snake sets, and understand you're surfing in someone's backyard.

Access & Facilities

No parking or facilities at the break itself. The reef sits next to a boat ramp and rocky shoreline at the far end of the bay. Watch for exposed rocks on the paddle-out and during the ride. Shallow reef on exit is the primary hazard. Check the area's main point break, Tofinho, as a reference before committing to the slab.

Nearby Alternatives

Tofinho point is the high-quality right in the area and handles swell with more consistency and forgiveness. Praia Tofo offers a softer right point and inside beachbreak on smaller days, a useful option when Backdoor is too big or blown out.
