A compact, hollow beach break wedged between the hillside of Rocinha and the South Zone's coastal corridor, Sao Conrado punches hard for its size. It needs minimal swell to switch on, firing from under 1m up to 2m-plus when the conditions align. The dominant wave is a fast, hollow left wedge that unloads off the left corner of the beach, with rampy backdoor sections and an occasional right wedge off the far corner adding variety. Crowds are heavy every day of the week, dominated by bodyboarders, and the local crew from Rocinha rips. Respect is not optional here. Bottom: sand beach break. Season: works year-round with peaks in austral autumn and winter. Consistency: high. After heavy rain, sewage outfalls make the water genuinely hazardous, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This is the most popular bodyboarding break in Rio, and the lineup reflects it. Expect heavy crowds seven days a week. Locals from Rocinha are the dominant force in the water and they rip. Show respect from the moment you hit the sand. Dawn patrol is the surest way to find breathing room before the pack arrives.

Access & Facilities

The beach sits in front of the InterContinental Hotel, between Leblon and Barra da Tijuca. Hotels, restaurants, and cafes are nearby. No specialist surf facilities on the beach itself. Avoid the water for 48-72 hours after significant rainfall due to sewage runoff from surrounding drainage.

Nearby Alternatives

When Sao Conrado is maxed out or too crowded, Ipanema and Arpoador to the northeast offer more manageable peaks across a wider skill range. Barra da Tijuca to the southwest is a long stretch of beach break that spreads the crowd thin and can hold larger swells.
