A fast, punchy beach break tucked between Arpoador and a military zone on the southern edge of Rio de Janeiro, Praia do Diabo punches above its weight when the rest of the city goes flat. It picks up swell earlier than Ipanema and Copacabana, often holding rideable surf at 1-2ft when neighboring beaches are dead. SW to S groundswell is the bread and butter here, pairing best with light NE offshore winds and low to mid tide. The wave is short and quick, rarely stretching beyond 50m, but on a solid day it can throw proper barrels over the sand bottom, with a large offshore rock producing triangular A-frame peaks when size builds past 4ft. Bodyboarders dominate the lineup, but shortboarders willing to compete for quick drops will find real barrels here. Bottom: sand. Season: year-round with peaks in southern hemisphere autumn and winter. Consistency: high relative to surrounding city breaks. Note that the second and third cove sections are accessible only by paddling as the sand access routes pass through a military zone.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are crowded. Weekends are intense, with bodyboarders, dogs, and beachgoers all competing for space. Dawn patrol on weekdays is your best window for less friction in the lineup. The bodyboard contingent is established here, respect the rotation and do not snake sets.

Access & Facilities

Walk to the far left end of Ipanema beach and continue around the rocks at Arpoador. The first cove is a short walk from there. Arpoador has water, cafes, and board rentals nearby. The military zone means beach access to the inner coves is restricted to the water only. Watch for rocks near the shore on the bigger tides.

Nearby Alternatives

Arpoador itself is immediately adjacent and often works the same swell with longer walls. When Diabo is too small or blown out, Ipanema beach peaks further up the bay offer more exposure to incoming swell.
