A scrappy beachbreak wedged between industrial infrastructure north of Leça da Palmeira, Praia do Aterro picks up S to NW swell and produces beach peaks that can reach genuine quality on good days. Offshore winds are easterly, and the wave works best at low to mid tide when the sandbars have some shape. Size range is 3 to 8ft, with the spot starting to fire around 3 to 5ft and holding up past 6ft on solid swells. Intermediate surfers are the target audience, the wave can get crowded on weekends but mid-week sessions are more relaxed. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: medium. The biggest honest caveat here is water quality: industrial and commercial pollution from neighbouring facilities is a known issue, so check after heavy rain and consider the risk before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekends bring a crowd, especially when conditions are on. The spot is known locally and draws surfers from the greater Porto and Matosinhos area. Arrive early or go mid-week to find more space. Localism is not reported as heavy, but the lineup earns its own respect like any consistent regional wave.

Access & Facilities

The beach sits north of Leça da Palmeira and has a car park. There are no formal surf facilities on site. Water quality is flagged as commercially polluted due to the industrial surroundings, so exercise caution. Bring your own water and food.

Nearby Alternatives

When Aterro is too polluted or blown out, Matosinhos to the south is the obvious move: more consistent sandbars with better infrastructure. Leça da Palmeira is also close and catches similar swell, with the harbour breakwall helping to shape the peaks when conditions cooperate.
