At chest-high to slightly overhead, all skill levels can find something, though bigger swells flush out intermediate and advanced surfers to the better-shaped peaks. Bottom: sand. Scout the beach before paddling out and pick the bank with the cleanest shape, because the best peak shifts daily and a flat Ipanema does not mean a flat Barra da Tijuca or Prainha 30 minutes west.

When Ipanema is dead flat, Barra da Tijuca offers more exposed beachbreak peaks a 30-minute drive west. Prainha, further along the same stretch, is the most consistent option in the greater Rio area and worth the extra travel when city beaches are not firing.
