A generous sand-bottom A-frame sitting on the west side of a small island near Barra, Macumba offers multiple distinct peaks across a long beach, from mellow longboard corners to a faster, hollower middle section locals call CCB. SSW to SE swells in the 3-8ft range light it up best, with NW to NE offshore winds keeping faces clean. Low to mid tide produces the longest rides, at full tide the wave tends to close out and shorten. Beginners gravitate to the left corner (Farofa), while the CCB section rewards intermediates with punchier, hollower sets. Bottom: sand. Season: April through October, with fall and winter peaking. Consistency: reliable year-round. Avoid weekends unless you enjoy a busy lineup, longboarders cutting across rights included. Water quality drops noticeably after heavy rain, particularly near the right corner, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are manageable. Weekends turn the lineup into controlled chaos, especially on smaller days when the better peaks concentrate surfers. Localism is relatively relaxed by Rio standards, but respect in the water matters. The left corner draws inexperienced longboarders, which creates real collision risk. Stay alert and pick your peak accordingly.

Access & Facilities

About 30km west of central Rio. Driveable with easy parking near the beach. Public buses run here, though expect a 1-2km walk from the stop. The SURFbus reportedly links Rio's main breaks. Food and facilities are available along Barra. No major water hazards beyond board traffic and post-rain water quality near the right peak.

Nearby Alternatives

Canto do Recreio sits on the east side of the same island and fires on identical swells, worth checking if Macumba is maxed out or too crowded. Further west, Prainha offers a more sheltered right-hand beach break that holds larger SSW swell well.
