A hollow, fast slab on the southern Rio de Janeiro coastline, Postinho (also known as Postinho Lage) breaks over a rocky reef with serious power when the swell shows up. It needs 1.5m to 2m to wake up and handles well overhead and beyond, holding together up to 5m-plus on the right day. Optimal conditions are low to mid tide with offshore winds cleaning up the face. This is a wave for experienced surfers only: the reef is unforgiving, the barrels are legitimate, and the localism is among the heaviest you will encounter in Rio. Bottom: reef. Season: consistent enough to be a regional classic but breaks only sometimes, requiring patience. Consistency: moderate. Come alone, come respectful, and come knowing the hierarchy in the water before you paddle out. Showing up with a crew of visiting surfers to this spot is a fast way to ruin your trip.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays the lineup is quiet. Weekends it fills up fast, and the local crew here is tight and territorial. This is one of the heavier lineups on the Rio coast. Visiting surfers should come solo or in small groups, sit deep, wait their turn, and read the room. Do not paddle around locals. Do not drop in. Do not bring a van full of friends.

Access & Facilities

Located in the city, reachable by a short walk of 5 to 15 minutes. Public access. The paddle-out itself is the challenge: expect more than 20 minutes of paddling or consider a boat option depending on conditions. No dedicated facilities at the break. Bring water and wax and sort everything before you leave the road.

Nearby Alternatives

The southern Rio coastline has other reef and beach options within range when Postinho is flat or the vibe is too heavy. Grumari and Prainha to the west offer beach and point setups that handle similar swell windows with a more accessible atmosphere on smaller days.
