Wedging, shallow peaks at the eastern end of São Conrado beach define Pepino, where a massive rock headland deflects SW and SE swells into unpredictable backwash peaks roughly 1 mile west of Leblon along the coastal road. SW swells bounce off the rocks and create hollow, fast-breaking rights and lefts that can reach chest to slightly overhead before closing out. NW to NE offshores keep it clean, and medium tides are the sweet spot. Skill range runs intermediate to advanced depending on size: smaller swells attract learners, but the shallow sand and wedge factor punish mistakes at any size. Bottom: sand. Season: fall and winter peak, consistent year-round. Consistency: moderate, but when Ipanema goes flat this can fire. The beach is backed by Rio's largest favela, so leave nothing in your car and park only where an attendant is present.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Locals call it Pepinoline and treat it as a neighborhood peak. Crowds are moderate and the vibe is manageable rather than hostile, but it is a known spot in a surf-dense city. Dawn patrol on weekdays gives you the best chance of a less competitive lineup. Shoulder burn is light given how close to shore the waves break.

Access & Facilities

Easy road access along the twisting coastal road past Pontao de Leblon. Park only where a paid attendant is working. Do not leave valuables in the car or on the beach. Water quality is poor year-round due to a permanent sewage outlet, with conditions worsening significantly after heavy rain. Bring reef booties if the shallow sandbanks are an issue.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pepino closes out in bigger swell, Ipanema and Arpoador are a short drive east and handle more size with less backwash interference. Barra da Tijuca to the west is a long, exposed beach that picks up similar S and SW swell with more consistent peaks spread across a wider stretch of sand.
