A punchy reef peak on Oregon's coast, The Cove sits just across the groin from Cottesloe beach break and rewards surfers willing to navigate a shallow, urchin-studded bottom. It needs solid swell to wake up, starting to show form around 5-6ft and holding through 8ft-plus before it maxes. SW to NW groundswell lines up best, and offshore winds clean up the face significantly. Low to mid tide is the window: too high and the wave loses shape, too low and the reef becomes genuinely hazardous. The peak throws a hollow, fast take-off before the face walls up briefly, then flattens into a close-out section. The ledge section offers snappier, more forgiving rides but closes out on bigger sets. Midweek the lineup is quiet, weekends draw a crowd that paddles hard for priority. Bottom: reef. Season: fall through winter. Consistency: moderate. Bring a board with enough volume to generate speed through the flat middle section, and reef booties are strongly advised given the urchin risk.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekday sessions run light, but weekends see the lineup fill up fast. With short ride lengths, competition for set waves is real and paddling hard is non-negotiable. No notable heavy localism is reported, but standard lineup etiquette applies. Dawn patrol midweek is the easiest path to uncrowded sets.

Access & Facilities

Park in The Cove car park, walk down the main stairs, and stow gear under the cliff. The beach break at Cottesloe is immediately across the groin and offers an alternative when the reef is out of range. Urchins are the primary hazard here: the reef is extremely shallow and reef booties are not optional, they are essential. Water quality is typical for the region, no dedicated surf facilities on site.

Nearby Alternatives

When The Cove is too small or closed out, Cottesloe beach break across the groin offers consistent beach peaks that work across a wider swell range and tide. On larger NW swells, other exposed reefs along this stretch of coast can fire when the size is up.
