Cape Kiwanda's flat-bottomed beachbreak delivers mellow rights and lefts on a sandy bottom sheltered by a dramatic basalt headland on Oregon's central coast. W, SW, and S swells in the 3-6ft range light up the sandbars best, anything bigger pushes energy to the outside right off the cape itself. E winds keep it clean. Medium tide is the sweet spot, though the break runs at all tides. This is a welcoming, longboard-friendly lineup that draws a mixed crowd from beginners to intermediates, filling up fast on summer weekends when conditions cooperate. Bottom: Sand. Season: June-September. Consistency: Moderate. Arrive early on weekends to beat the families, van-lifers, and visiting surfers who fill the large paved lot by mid-morning.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe here skews distinctly toward San Onofre territory: longboarders, beginners, families, and mellow locals sharing a relaxed lineup. Localism is minimal, but summer weekends pack the water. Out-of-state plates have reportedly drawn friction near the Pelican Pub parking area, so be respectful with where you leave your rig.

Access & Facilities

Exit Highway 101 onto Three Capes Scenic Loop into Pacific City. The wide paved lot at the north end of Cape Kiwanda Drive sits alongside the Pelican Brewing brewpub, which offers post-surf food and beer. Hot showers and multiple overflow lots along the beach make logistics easy. Hazards include tsunami risk and a moderate shark factor, standard for this stretch of Oregon coast.

Nearby Alternatives

When Pacific City is blown out or maxed, check the beach breaks a short distance south along the same stretch of sand, visible from the parking lot. Further up the Three Capes Loop, Neskowin and Lincoln City can offer different exposures depending on swell and wind.
