Shifting sandbars line this stretch of Oregon coast just north of Newport, where the Yaquina Head Lighthouse marks the northern end and provides meaningful wind protection from the north. W and SW swells fill in from late spring through fall, with the peak months running June through October. High tide tends to push the best shape, and smaller swell windows, thigh-high to overhead, keep the lineup accessible without the chaos of a heavy beach break. Beginners and intermediates dominate, and the vibe stays mellow. Bottom: sand. Season: June to October. Consistency: moderate. The farther north you walk toward the head, the less crowded things get, and a rip current near the headland doubles as a free paddle-out channel if you read it right.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

South Beach and Agate Beach draw regular surfers whenever swell is up, but the beach is wide and long. Walking north toward Moolack Beach thins the crowd considerably. Locals are welcoming, localism is minimal, and the overall energy is relaxed. Dawn patrol in summer gives you peaks to yourself.

Access & Facilities

For Agate Beach, turn west onto NW Oceanview Drive just north of Newport to the Agate Beach Wayside. Moolack Beach, farther north, has a dirt pullout off the west side of Highway 101. Newport town has food, gear shops, and lodging. Water quality is clean. No significant hazards beyond standard cold-water Oregon conditions.

Nearby Alternatives

South Beach State Park, a few miles south, offers a signed lot off Highway 101 and picks up similar W and SW swell with slightly different sandbar setups. When this whole stretch goes flat, Lincoln City to the north and Otter Rock just south can offer angle changes worth checking.
