A sand-bottom jetty break at the mouth of the Siuslaw River, Florence South Jetty produces two distinct waves depending on size and tide. On small, clean summer days with S or SW swell and a N or NE wind, the south-facing nook beside the jetty offers sheltered, fun rights. When a big W swell hits at low tide, a wedgy, hollow left peels off the inside of the harbor entrance, breaking near the jetty and running into the river channel. That inner left is the real draw, but it holds five surfers at absolute capacity and comes with some of the most territorial localism on the Oregon coast. Spray-painted warnings near the break are not ironic. Bottom: Sand. Season: Year-round, with winter W swells best for the left, summer S swells for the rights. Consistency: High. Check the tide charts hard before paddling out: an outgoing tide will flush you past the bar faster than you can sprint-paddle back.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Forecasts rate the localism as about as heavy as it gets on the Oregon coast. The outer jetty area is relatively open, but the inner left is intensely territorial. Five surfers is a crowd in that pocket. Out-of-state plates are noticed. Respect means sitting in the channel, watching, and earning your place slowly. Do not blow your own trumpet in the lineup.

Access & Facilities

Follow the brown-signed South Jetty Dune and Beach access road south of Florence into the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. A fee kiosk sits about half a mile in. The six-mile drive through the dunes ends on progressively deteriorating pavement riddled with sharp rocks, so drive slowly and check your tires. Camping is available in the dunes area. Water quality is generally clean but this is an active river mouth, so use judgment.

Nearby Alternatives

When Florence is maxed out or the localism is suffocating, head north toward Yachats State Park for beach access with less pressure. South of Coos Bay, the North Bend area opens up a complex of exposed beachbreaks and jetty setups worth exploring on similar W and SW swell windows.
