A horseshoe cove carved just south of Cape Falcon on Oregon's North Coast, Short Sands punches above its size by funneling NW, N, and big S swells into wedgy, refraction-amplified peaks. Best conditions run head-high to double-overhead on an incoming tide with S winds keeping faces clean. The cove blocks most wind directions, making it a reliable retreat when exposed stretches nearby are blown out, but the surf quality swings between peaky and hollow or soft and mushy depending on tide and swell angle. Forecasts rate it Beginner to Advanced, which means the lineup is genuinely mixed, and summer weekends bring enough beachgoers and learners to make the water feel small. Crowds thin dramatically in winter. Bottom: sand. Season: September through February. Consistency: medium. Cold Pacific water demands a 4/3 or thicker with booties from October through April, and anyone easily frustrated by inconsistency should check conditions before making the hike.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe is welcoming and locals are generally mellow. Summer brings a genuine crowd, including beginners on weekend days. Winter thins things out considerably, and that is the best window for surfers who want the peaks to themselves. A current runs regularly through the cove regardless of season, so pick your paddle-out line carefully.

Access & Facilities

Oswald West State Park has a car park and a short trail through old-growth forest to the beach. The walk is roughly a quarter mile. A lifeguard is on duty in season. Stormwater runout is an occasional pollution concern after heavy rain. Freezing water temps in winter are the primary hazard.

Nearby Alternatives

Long Sands to the south is a wide west-facing beach that handles NW wind better and offers more consistent peaks across a larger stretch of sand. Cannon Beach and the Ecola Creek mouth to the north add options when Short Sands is either too small or closed out.
