Moolack Beach is a fickle Oregon beach break that occasionally fires with hollow, powerful peaks along a stretch of open coastline on the central Oregon coast. It needs the right combo: offshore winds from the E or NE, a clean NW to SW groundswell, and cooperative sand to even produce a rideable peak. The lineup shifts constantly and rarely holds shape, but on its handful of good days per year it can produce head-high, long-peeling walls with legitimate punch. Experienced surfers only, less because of difficulty and more because the inconsistency means you need to read conditions sharply. Weekdays you may have the place to yourself, weekends draw enough people to make the inconsistency more frustrating. Bottom: sand. Season: fall through winter for swell, but quality days are rare regardless. Consistency: very low, maybe five or six real sessions a year. Check it from the highway before committing to a paddle-out, if nobody is out and the banks look closed, keep driving north.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays the lot can be empty, weekends see more traffic from Newport and the surrounding area. Localism is low-key but experienced surfers dominate the water on the rare good day. The wave's inconsistency is its own crowd filter. If it's working and people are out, they earned it by checking regularly, give them their space.

Access & Facilities

Parked directly off Highway 101 at the state park. Walk the access trail to the beach. Easy visual check from the road. No secret access involved, but that also means zero amenities beyond a parking area. Bring water, change in the car. The southerly drift is strong, paddle out with your exit in mind.

Nearby Alternatives

The coastline stretching a couple of miles north of Moolack holds additional beach break peaks worth scanning on the same drive. If the banks at Moolack look blown out or closed, keep scanning north before giving up on the session.
