Oregon's most accessible learning wave sits inside Devil's Punch Bowl State Park, south of Depot Bay, where sand-covered rocks produce forgiving beach peaks that routinely get head-high and occasionally a touch bigger. Best on a small to mid-sized W swell with E or SE winds, the wave is genuinely mellow most of the time, offering long ride potential of 150-300m on a good day. It suits beginners through intermediates, though winter rips and currents around the rocks demand more awareness than the friendly vibe suggests. Bottom: sand over reef. Season: autumn through winter for best swell, summer for small S swells with wind protection from Cape Foulweather. Consistency: reliable on small W swell. Arrive early on warm-weather weekends, the parking lot fills fast and the lineup reflects it.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays are mellow with few surfers out. Sunny weekends bring full parking lots and a mixed crowd of learners, longboarders, and spectators. Localism is minimal, one of the more welcoming lineups on the Oregon coast. When nearby Agate Beach isn't working, expect the crowd to consolidate here.

Access & Facilities

Parking lot and restrooms at Devil's Punch Bowl State Park. Beach access via a long stairway. Lot fills quickly on warm days, so dawn patrol timing helps. Exercise caution paddling out after heavy rain, water quality dips post-storm. Cold water year-round demands at minimum a 4/3, booties in winter. Sharks and rip tides are genuine hazards, not theoretical ones.

Nearby Alternatives

Agate Beach to the south is the regional go-to when conditions align and handles more swell size. Boiler Bay, just north, is a reef setup that works on different tides and suits more experienced surfers when it's on.
