A mellow beach break tucked behind a southwest-facing jetty on Oregon's southern coast, Brookings Jetty punches below the weight of spots further north near Gold Beach or south toward Crescent City. The jetty's orientation, combined with offshore rocks that knock down northerly swell energy, keeps the surf on the smaller side most sessions. SW swell at waist-to-overhead, NE offshores, and a medium-to-high tide produce the best shape, though expect mushburgers more often than not. Beginners and intermediates will find the gently sloping beach and plentiful inside whitewater welcoming. Bottom: sand. Season: June through October. Consistency: moderate. Shark risk is real here given proximity to the Chetco Rivermouth, so keep that in mind, especially during low-light sessions.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect moderate crowds on hot summer afternoons and weekends. The local high school contingent occasionally fronts attitude, but the spot's lack of punch keeps genuine localism in check. Dawn patrol or midweek mornings are the play if you want breathing room in the lineup.

Access & Facilities

Head south on Highway 101 and bear left onto West Benham Lane at the first stoplight north of the California border. Turn left onto Boat Basin Road at Beachfront RV Park and park in the dirt strip fronting the break. Watch for renegade RVs in the lot. No formal surf facilities on site, but Brookings town amenities are close.

Nearby Alternatives

If Brookings Jetty is closing out or too small, Gold Beach to the north picks up more swell and offers a different mix of beach and rivermouth setups worth checking. Crescent City across the California border to the south is another option when SW swell has more juice.
