One of Massachusetts' most powerful beachbreaks, Cape Ann delivers legitimate punch on a coastline that can go flat for weeks at a stretch. Situated in Gloucester, Long Beach is the standout, a sand-and-rock setup that catches NE and SE swells with unusual efficiency, producing hollow, wedging peaks at lower tides when sandbanks stack up energy. The southern corner hides a hollow left that fires into exposed rocks at low tide, a short channel near those rocks making bigger paddle-outs manageable. Best size runs knee-high to double overhead, with NW winds grooming the face. Chargers will get the most from this place, but experienced surfers comfortable in cold, unpredictable water can find real quality here when it fires. Dead high tide brings backwash that degrades the wave quickly, so time your session on the push or well before the peak. Bottom: sand and rock. Season: September to March. Consistency: moderate.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowds are moderate, which in New England terms means manageable most of the year. The colder the water, the fewer the people, which is a genuine incentive to push into winter. Localism is described as doable with occasional territorial behavior on standout days. Respect the lineup, wait your turn, and the vibe stays reasonable. On good days the southern corner left draws the most experienced crew.

Access & Facilities

Gloucester is roughly an hour north of Boston. Parking near Long Beach is legally limited, expensive, and tends to fill fast in any swell window. Budget for meters or lots, and arrive early. Hypothermia is a real hazard here: water temps drop hard in winter and a thick wetsuit with booties and hood is non-negotiable from October through May. Rocks and exposed reef on the southern corner demand awareness, and the Cape Ann area sits within a shark corridor, so heed any posted advisories.

Nearby Alternatives

If Cape Ann is maxed out or blown out, Good Harbor Beach nearby handles smaller, cleaner swell better with less consequence. Further up the North Shore, Plum Island offers more beach length and different sandbar orientations that can find angles Cape Ann misses.
