A solid Cape Cod beach break that delivers consistent peaks across a wide open stretch of Atlantic-facing sand, Coast Guard Beach sits within the Cape Cod National Seashore near Eastham, Massachusetts. It picks up NE through SE swells cleanly, with low to mid tide generally producing the best shape before the sand flattens out at high. Offshore winds are typically NW to W, which lines up well with the prevailing autumn and winter wind patterns. The wave starts showing at 3-5ft and handles overhead-plus on bigger NE groundswells, occasionally running 150-300m on the right sandbar. Crowd levels are low even on weekends, partly because vehicle access is restricted and a trolley shuttle runs from the Doane Rock parking area in-season. Bottom: sand. Season: Sept-Feb. Consistency: moderate to good in autumn and winter. Bring a full wetsuit and booties from October onward, and be aware that great white sharks are documented in these waters, particularly in late summer and fall.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Crowd pressure is minimal compared to other Cape Cod spots. The trolley access system limits numbers in summer, and in autumn and winter the beach thins out further. The Cape has a small but tight local surf community, standard lineup etiquette applies and dropping in is noticed.

Access & Facilities

Restricted vehicle access to the beachfront means parking at the Doane Rock lot and riding the seasonal shuttle. Off-season you may be able to drive closer. The beach is part of Cape Cod National Seashore, so facilities are seasonal. Bring your own water and food in the colder months.

Nearby Alternatives

Nauset Light Beach to the north picks up similar swell and is worth checking when Coast Guard's banks are poor. Marconi Beach further south offers another exposed Atlantic option when the sandbar setup isn't cooperating at Coast Guard.
