A curving sandy peninsula on the southern arm of Boston Harbor, Nantasket picks up NE groundswell that sneaks into an otherwise sheltered window. SW to W winds go offshore, NE swell is the primary driver, and the beach works across all tides though high tide softens the punch and low-to-mid produces the best shape. The curve of the beach means the southern end faces more NE while the northern end opens toward SE, creating a variety of peaks along a long stretch of sand. Most of the lineup is beginner-to-intermediate friendly with occasional hollow sections on the better swells, and the crowd stays manageable except when everyone converges on the peaks near the pay carparks. Bottom: sand. Season: September through March. Consistency: medium. Water quality is fair given proximity to Boston Harbor, and stormwater runoff after heavy rain is a real concern, so check conditions before paddling out post-storm.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

The vibe here is welcoming and rarely hostile. Weekends pull more bodies to the water, but the beach is long enough to spread the crowd across multiple peaks. Localism is minimal. The worst congestion happens when a clean swell hits during a weekend and everyone gravitates to the same obvious peak in front of the surf shop or the main carpark in Hull.

Access & Facilities

Paved carparks along the beach make access straightforward, though metering applies and lots fill on summer weekends. Facilities include restrooms, food nearby, and a surf shop in Hull for rentals and conditions intel. Water quality is fair at best, sitting near Boston Harbor, and stormwater runoff after rain can degrade it further. Dress for cold: full 5/4 with hood, gloves, and booties from November through April.

Nearby Alternatives

If Nantasket is maxed out or the swell angle is wrong, the large jetty at the southern end of Winthrop Beach is the closest option toward central Boston and catches a similar NE window. Scituate Harbor to the south offers a long left pointbreak over boulders when SW to W winds are running and there's enough swell to wrap around the headland.
