Madaket is a powerful beach break on the western tip of Nantucket that comes into its own when hurricane swells push through and the island's more popular spots max out. It needs solid surf to show its potential, starting around 3-5ft and holding well into double-overhead and beyond. Offshore winds from the NE keep faces clean, while low tide tends to focus the power and produce the best shape. Experienced surfers only: the rip here is serious and strengthens considerably with size, demanding solid water awareness before you paddle out. Bottom: sand. Season: late summer through fall hurricane season. Consistency: low to moderate, swell-dependent. If you're heading out in bigger conditions, study the rip before committing and have a clear exit plan.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

This spot sees very few surfers even on weekends, largely because it requires real size to get going. The low crowd count is a function of conditions, not secrecy. Respect the handful of locals who call it their own when it's pumping.

Access & Facilities

Follow Madaket Road from Nantucket town all the way to its western end. There is minimal infrastructure at the beach, no food, no water, no rentals. Bring your own supplies for the session. The rip current is the primary hazard and can be extremely strong in larger surf.

Nearby Alternatives

When Madaket is too big or the rip is unmanageable, check Cisco Beach on the south shore for a more sheltered option. Sconset on the east side picks up NE swell when the western end is blown out.
