A popular beachbreak north of Taipei that draws massive summer crowds, Jin Shan (also called Green Bay or Golden Mountain) delivers punchy, forgiving peaks across a stretch of sand between boulder sections at the north end and a central jetty. Best on N to SE swells in the 2-5ft range, it works on all tides and turns on during SW offshore winds. The wave character is generally easy and average, though the backside of a typhoon can sharpen things up considerably. Beginners dominate the lineup from June through August, and crowding is the main frustration here. Bottom: sand. Season: summer peak, some shoulder months. Consistency: medium. Note the large rivermouth jetty to the south pulls in pollution, and the next bay hosts a nuclear plant cooling outflow, so position yourself carefully.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Expect heavy crowds in summer. This is a go-to beginner spot for Taipei day-trippers, meaning the water can be chaotic with inexperienced surfers and swimmers. Come early or outside peak summer months to find breathing room. Localism is not a notable issue given the beginner-heavy vibe.

Access & Facilities

Jin Shan is accessible from Taipei by road with a proper carpark on site. Restrooms are available. Keep awareness of the rivermouth area further south given pollution signals. Avoid surfing near the nuclear plant cooling outflow in the adjacent bay.

Nearby Alternatives

Wan-Li is worth checking nearby when Jin Shan is maxed out or too busy. Baishawan, a north-facing white sand beach also reachable from Taipei by bus or train, is another option for similar swell windows. Further afield, Fulong Beach on the east coast picks up swell more reliably and offers a notable step up in quality.
