A long hollow left-hand point reef that only fires on serious typhoon energy, Cheng Gong sits on Taiwan's rugged east coast roughly 90 minutes north of Taitung. It needs Category 4 or 5 typhoon swell from the E-SE, or a significant NE groundswell, before it really starts to pump. The wave wraps around the headland and can run all the way to the harbor, 150-300m on a good day, staying hollow and fast the entire way. N and NE winds are offshore here, making it workable during typhoon approach windows. Starts functioning around 6-8ft and holds well past 10ft. Experts only: the bottom is sharp reef and dead coral shelf, rips are present, and the lip line moves fast. Bottom: point reef. Season: Jun-Feb. Consistency: low. Come with a crew, not solo, and know your exit before you paddle out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Local surfers are sparse to nonexistent at this break. Expect curious onlookers, fishermen mostly, rather than a competitive lineup. That said, the wave is serious enough to self-select the crowd. On a genuine typhoon swell day, a handful of experienced surfers may show. Weekends see only a few surfers even in season.

Access & Facilities

No facilities on site. There is a car park in the small bay at the wave's end. The headland itself has limited room, so scout before committing. Paddle out from the harbor-side bay rather than attempting to fight across the exposed headland rocks. A rip runs close to the rocks: respect it and use the channel. Cheng Gong town has basic supplies.

Nearby Alternatives

Donghe Rivermouth, south toward Taitung, is a far more consistent swell-magnet and worth checking when Cheng Gong is too small or the swell window is marginal. Bashien Dong (Eight Fairy Cave) further north offers powerful lefts when a similar NE swell is running.
