A long boulder pointbreak on Taiwan's northeast coast, Bashien Dong (Eight Fairy Cave) serves up some of the most satisfying left-hand walls in the country when NE swells fill in. Optimal conditions stack up with NE swell from 2 to 8ft, NW offshore winds, and the wave works across all tides, though bigger swells expose the contrast between soft walling shoulders on the outside and short punchy peelers over the rocky inside section before a heavy shorepound. It suits confident intermediates and above who can read a rocky lineup and hold their own in overhead surf. Bottom: boulder point. Season: autumn and winter NE swell season. Consistency: medium. Watch the shorepound on the inside carefully, getting caught inside on a set here against boulders is a hard lesson. The rivermouth and estuary position means water quality can drop after heavy rain, so check conditions before paddling out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Lineups here are rarely crowded by regional standards, which is part of the appeal for those willing to make the drive from Taipei. Local surfers know the spot well, so standard respect protocols apply: wait your turn, don't snake sets, and acknowledge those who've been surfing here longest.

Access & Facilities

A carpark is available at the coast road overlook, which also gives a solid vantage point to read the break before paddling out. No facilities on site, so bring water and food. The rocky shoreline demands reef-ready footwear for entry and exit. Given the estuary and rivermouth influence on water quality, a quick rinse kit and possibly a Rashguard to minimize skin contact is practical after rain.

Nearby Alternatives

South down the coast toward Fongbin, a rivermouth beach picks up swell and offers a change of scenery when Bashien Dong is too big or too small. Further south, the consistent swell-magnet of Donghe Rivermouth is worth the drive on smaller days when the NE window isn't fully activated.
