A powerful sandbar break on Portugal's northern coastline, Ofir works across a wide swell range and throws up surprisingly long rides on its best days. It picks up N to NW Atlantic swell funnelled along the Cávado estuary mouth, with offshore winds from the E to SE. Mid and high tide keep the banks from going too shallow and closing out. On a good day, sandbars can produce rides stretching 150-300m, mostly on rights near the jetty and lefts further along the beach. The wave suits experienced surfers when the size climbs past 6ft, intermediates will find room in smaller swells under 4ft. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring, peaking Oct-Mar. Consistency: reliable when Atlantic groundswells run. Rips and currents are real hazards here, so read the water before paddling out, and respect the locals who know these banks well.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Weekdays stay relatively quiet, but weekends draw heavy crowds. Local surfers know these banks far better than visitors and take priority seriously. Don't snake sets, don't drop in, and don't follow locals to their preferred peaks. Earning respect here takes patience, not aggression.

Access & Facilities

Ofir is accessible via the beach road north of Fão. Parking is available near the hotel fronting the main break. Basic amenities are close by. Rips can run hard along the jetty structure, especially on dropping tide, so use the channel carefully and watch for current pulling toward the river mouth.

Nearby Alternatives

Espinho and Viana do Castelo offer beach breaks to the south and north respectively when Ofir is maxed out or too crowded. The Minho River mouth near Caminha can also fire in the right NW swell and wind combo.
