A fast, walled right-hand jetty break off Espinho's rocky groyne delivers some of the most consistent surf in north Portugal, roughly 20km south of Porto. SW to NW swell between 3-10ft is the sweet spot, with offshore easterly winds and low to mid tide keeping faces clean and sections tubing. It suits intermediate to advanced surfers, though the main beach offers softer options when small. The Casino Right in particular draws a competitive, experienced crowd that knows the wave well and expects visitors to earn their place in the lineup. Bottom: mixed sand and rock. Season: Oct-Mar, consistent year-round. Consistency: high. Water quality is a genuine issue here, a legacy of nearby industrial activity, so a post-session rinse and avoiding after heavy rain are practical minimums.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Espinho is the busiest spot in the area, and the Casino Right earns borderline-localised status on good days. Weekends from around 10am pack the lineup. Dawn patrol mid-week is the honest answer. Observe etiquette strictly, wait your turn, and don't snake. The main beach peaks are more relaxed if you just want water time.

Access & Facilities

Street parking along the beachside promenade is an option but contested. A car park near the Tourist Information Office is the cleaner bet. Camping is available nearby. Bars and cheap food are close. Rip currents run along the jetties and there are rock piles on the inside, plus fishermen's lines to watch for during quieter periods.

Nearby Alternatives

If Espinho is maxed or the crowd is unbearable, the series of jetty-divided beaches stretching south hold similar setups with fewer bodies. Mindelo to the north can produce punchy A-frame peaks when north wind backs off, and Afife further north is worth the drive for fast, hollow beachbreak peaks on a big NW swell.
