A reliable beach-break on Portugal's Zona Norte coastline, Cortegaça produces punchy peaks that reward surfers who can read shifting sandbanks and commit to hollow sections. It picks up NW and SW Atlantic swells cleanly, needs offshore easterly winds to hold its shape, and works best from mid to high tide when the banks fill out and the lips throw more consistently. Optimal size runs 3-8ft, though it can handle overhead-plus when the banks align. The wave suits experienced surfers looking for performance conditions without the circus of better-known spots to the south. Weekday lineups are often empty, weekends bring a handful of locals but rarely crowded. Bottom: sand. Season: autumn through spring. Consistency: moderate to good in winter swell windows. Bring a shortboard and be ready to move peaks, because banks shift and yesterday's best section may be washed out by morning. The surf school presence indicates beginner-friendlier corners exist, but the better banks are firmly intermediate-to-advanced territory.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Cortegaça runs quiet most of the week. Weekends see a few locals in the water but nothing resembling pressure. Locals are reported as friendly. Standard beach respect applies: don't snake, call your waves, and rotate if the peak gets tight. Dawn patrol on weekends gives you the best banks with the fewest bodies.

Access & Facilities

The beach is accessible from the small coastal village of Cortegaça in Ovar municipality, roughly between Espinho and Aveiro on the N109 coastal route. Parking is straightforward at the beachfront. A surf camp and school operate here, which means rentals and basic amenities are nearby in season. Water quality is generally good. No notable urchin or reef hazard on the sand bottom, but shore dump can be punishing on low-tide sets.

Nearby Alternatives

When Cortegaça's banks go flat or onshore winds ruin the shape, Espinho to the north offers more exposed beach-break options that can pick up the same NW swell. Furadouro and the Aveiro coastline to the south provide additional sandbank variety worth scouting on the same road trip.
