A right-hand point break peeling along a rocky shoreline between Jardim do Mar and Paul do Mar on Madeira's southwest coast, Ponta Pequena rewards patience with long, powerful walls on the right swell. Optimal conditions are N, NW, or W swells in the 4-8ft range, with NE winds holding the face clean. Low tide is the call here, when the wave stands up sharpest over the reef and the boil-line becomes readable. This is an advanced-only lineup: the wave moves fast, the rock hazards are unforgiving, and the cliff-trail access filters out anyone underprepared. Bottom: rock/point. Season: Oct through Mar, when North Atlantic groundswells fire consistently. Consistency: moderate to good in peak winter months. Arrive early when a solid NW groundswell is running, and scout the line from the clifftop before committing to the paddle-out.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Ponta Pequena is rarely crowded, largely because access keeps the numbers down. The local crew knows the spot well and will notice unfamiliar faces. Keep a respectful attitude, wait your turn, and don't snake sets. The natural vibe is relaxed as long as visitors reciprocate.

Access & Facilities

Access is via a clifftop trail that involves scrambling over sharp, spiky rocks. Wear foot protection to and from the water. Boat access from a nearby harbor is an option when conditions make the trail risky. No facilities at the break itself. Stock water and food from Jardim do Mar or Paul do Mar beforehand. Watch for boils mid-wave that can redirect the board unexpectedly.

Nearby Alternatives

Jardim do Mar, a short distance east, offers a well-known left-hand reef that works on similar swell windows and can provide a backup if Ponta Pequena's angle isn't cooperating. Paul do Mar, to the west, picks up more W swell and handles bigger days when the North Atlantic is pumping.
