A fast, hollow right-hand point on Madeira's south coast, Lugar de Baixo delivers long freight-train walls when the Atlantic pushes S to NW swell into the 4-15ft range. Offshore northerlies keep faces clean, and the window tightens to roughly one hour either side of high tide since a seawall was built, which now generates backwash that ruins the top of the tide. At low tide the reef is dangerously shallow, so the workable window is genuinely narrow. Mid to high tide, on the right swell, it produces very long rides of 150-300m with steep drops and hollow sections that only experienced surfers can handle. Bottom: point reef. Season: October through March. Consistency: medium. Bring a step-up for the bigger days and arrive at dawn before the weekend crowd from nearby Funchal fills the lineup.

About this break

What it's actually like

Crowd & Localism

Proximity to Funchal means weekends can see a crowd, though the skill threshold keeps outright kooks away. Treat locals with respect. Dawn patrol on a midweek morning gives you the best chance of space in the lineup on a working swell.

Access & Facilities

Free parking is available near the point. There are no surf-specific facilities on site, though Funchal is close enough for food and supplies. Water quality is not flagged as a concern. The seawall that altered the wave remains in place despite ongoing advocacy to remove it.

Nearby Alternatives

Paul do Mar, a short drive west, offers a boulder-bottom break with a different swell angle that can be good when Lugar de Baixo is too small. Jardim do Mar, one of Madeira's most celebrated right points, is also nearby and worth checking if larger S to SW groundswell is running.
